Manchester City lost their 3 point advantage at the top of the Premier League after a 1-0 defeat to Everton with In The Stands’ Rolly Pelovangu arguing that boss Roberto Mancini should bring back Carlos Tevez asap

It is a well known fact that most people have very short memories not least where football is concerned. When Jupp Heynckes ended Real Madrid’s decades-long exile from the summit of European football in 1998, he was shown the door and never asked to return even as a courtesy guest.

Likewise, the name of Vicente Del Bosque does little to get the Madrid fans (and management) hearts racing despite the great Spanish coach guiding a fabulously entertaining Los Blancos side to two La Liga titles along with two Champions League crowns in just four seasons.

Even in 2006 after three years without a major trophy some Manchester United ‘supporters’ called into question Sir Alex Ferguson’s ability to take the club further and whispers that the great Scot ought to step down began circulating!

You see, short memories and football go hand-in-hand like…well, Arsene Wenger’s eyesight.

This being said, the disease of short-memorynitus is currently affecting Manchester City boss Roberto Mancini whose decision to drive Carlos Tevez away from the club is being questioned more and more as City look like crumbling in their title pursuit having already been dumped out of two cups.

We all remember how it began. That fateful night in Munich when Manchester City were easily brushed aside by Bayern in a first half blitz before Tevez, having started the match as a substitute, seemingly refused to come on during the second period.

What happened next was controversial as an infuriated Roberto Mancini told the worlds press that the Argentine had sensationally refused to come on and quote, “will never play for the club again”.

At the time we at In The Stands argued that this was the wrong thing to say and do. Carlos Tevez was the Citizens’ most important player last season with his goals and superb performances up front helping to guide Mancini’s men to a first-ever UEFA Champions League spot as well as FA Cup success to boot.

At times it was thrilling stuff (witness his great goal against Chelsea at Eastlands for example) and set City up for a proper assault on the Premier League crown this campaign.

It is on this proviso that following the debacle at Bayern Munich, Roberto Mancini should never have hung Tevez out to dry so quickly and publically.

In fact, it can be argued that the Italian coach used Carlos Tevez’s ‘refusal to come on’ as an excuse for his own poor tactics and team being woeful as a brace by Mario Gomez sent the visitors scurrying back to Manchester with their tails firmly between their legs.

After the defeat nobody talked about the performance nor the tactics, rather about Tevez who was given little chance the defend himself especially with the language barrier against him.

Now the former Boca Juniors striker has been reduced to training with the reserves, being whored around like a piece of footballing meat and singing bad karaoke with fat, washed-up Argentine pop singers when in reality, he should be there at the Etihad, playing a part and helping City wrap up the league title.

Considering their available options, Tevez is too good a player to just kick to the curb especially now that City have become overly reliant on Sergio Aguero and Mario Balotelli. Edin Dzeko is too inconsistent.

However, even that poses problems because as good as he is, Balotelli has discipline problems whilst the superb Aguero cannot run the line 24/7 every week.

Now the defeat to Everton was not a disaster. City have a poor record at Goodison Park anyway and have lost there for the past two seasons, but with Tevez, their resolve, drive, vigour and quality would have been boosted significantly.

Never forget that the former City captain is a proven winner and on the pitch at least he gives his absolute all. At “squeaky bum time” this could be inimical but by Mancini ostracizing him too soon and too myopically, he has blocked this opportunity.

It may cost the blue half of Manchester the Premier League crown and we admonish that if Manchester City do not win the title against this very average Manchester United team, Mancini may well get the chop – especially if a certain Jose Mourinho becomes available in the summer!

Do the right thing Roberto and apologize to Tevez, get him a shirt and make him a highly-valued City player once again. That maiden Premier League title could depend on it.
