Manchester City midfielder Owen Hargreaves has been tipped to reclaim a spot in the England side after a superb debut showing during the Carling Cup.
Hargreaves netted his first goal for his new club as Manchester City ran out 2-0 winners over holders Birmingham City in their Third Round Carling Cup tie at Eastlands.
The former Bayern Munich ace surprisingly joined City as a free agent having been released by Manchester United in May after an injury-strewn spell at Old Trafford.
His first outing in the Sky Blue outfit of City sent pulses racing and in the wake of a splendid performance, City coach Roberto Mancini believes that Hargreaves is ready to once again stake a claim in the England squad.
“If he can get back and become the player he was, then he can be important for England again,” the Italian was quoted as saying by The Sun.
“I am very happy for him. He is a fantastic player and can become important for us if he can play often without injury.
“He came through it with no problems — and there have been no problems in the last three weeks.
“I decided before the game he would play 45 or 60 minutes and he managed 57 so I am happy. He moved well and he scored a fantastic goal,” Mancini added.
