Everton v Liverpool Preview: Merseyside Derby Classics
In The Stands previews the Merseyside derby as Everton host Liverpool at Goodison Park by looking back at three great clashes between the two clubs.

New season, same old Merseyside derby. Guts, tough tackles, controversy, heartbreak, bragging rights, city shame, red cards and pride all get thrown into an explosive brew which, has in the past, spilled over to produce some explosive encounters as In The Stands recalls below.
Everton 2-3 Liverpool, Premier League, 2000/2001
Gary McAllister’s injury-time freekick from long distance settled an utterly unforgettable Merseyside clash at Goodison Park in 2000.
Managed at the time by Frenchman Gerard Houllier, the Reds twice surrendered a lead before rallying back to nick it 3-2 at the death as the rest of the league drew its breath. PHEW!
Everton 1-0 Liverpool; FA Cup 2009
19-year-old Dan Gosling settled an edgy FA Cup reply at Goodison Park with a goal in the 117th minute as the dreaded penalties loomed.
The strike was all the more legendary by the fact that nobody watching it on TV actually saw it as broadcasters ITV suffered a technical glitch at that precise moment!
Everton 4-4 Liverpool; FA Cup Fifth Round Reply, 1991
The first match at Anfield ended in a tight goalless draw, with the replay three days later being the complete opposite as the Merseyside rivals played out a stupendous 4–4 thriller in which Peter Beardsley netted twice and ‘King Kenny’ duly resigned as Liverpool coach two days later.
