This is the second in InTheStands’ Transfermation series exploring the potential summer ahead for all Premiership clubs involved….this addition: Aston Villa
Where they stand:
Well, well, well, if I was an Aston Villa fan I would be sceptical – looking down the barrel at another mid-table finish. The quality just isn’t there and it’s diminishing day by day assuming that Ashley Young and Stewart Downing are heading for the exit. Let’s not forget that Aston Villa are still without a goalkeeper after releasing Brad Friedel…
Who they need:
But honestly, I don’t think its all doom and gloom at Aston Villa. Let’s look at the positives. Firstly, Aston Villa own perhaps the most natural goalscorer in the league in Darren Bent, who quite simply scores goals for fun. But it is essential that the England forward is fed top class delivery and this will be supplied from two of: Stewart Downing, Ashley Young (Although an exit seems probable), Gabby Agbonlahor and Mark Albrighton. Wingbacks may also help Villa next season, so purchasing Kyle Walker – who was on-loan from Tottenham last season – would be a positive start. Two of Habib Beye, Luke Young and Steven Warnock may be seen as surplus depending on how Alex Mcleish – who favours solid full-backs – sees things.
Mcleish should also look into raiding his old club (Although i’d expect any negotiations as a tad frosty) Ben Foster seems too obvious a purchase for Aston Villa that it would frustrate me if he didn’t join. Either Scott Dann or Roger Johnson would also be a fine addition to the Aston Villa defence that shipped 59 goals to relegated Birmingham’s 58. Craig Gardner would also be a fine addition – but I can’t imagine Mcleish raiding his club beyond two players, if at all.
In midfield Aston Villa harbour a huge amount of talent with Barry Bannan, Fabian Delph and Gary Gardner. I would suggest that one of these players should be partnered with defensive powerhouse Jean Makoun in a three man midfield including a play-maker such as Lyon’s Kim Kallstrom, Sochaux ‘s Marvin Martin and West Ham’s Thomas Hitzlsperger After a dreadful season captain Stiliyan Petrov and Steven Ireland should be seen the door, unless Ireland decides to recapture his form of three years ago.
Possible Line up for next season: 4-3-3:
(GK) Ben Foster; (RB) Kyle Walker, (CB)Scott Dann/ Roger Johnson, (CB) Ciaran Clark, (LB) Steven Warnock; (DMC) Jean Makoun, (CM) Fabian Delph, (CM) Kim Kallstrom; (LW) Stewart Downing, (RW) Mark Albrighton; (FW)Darren Bent
Subs:
Gary Gardner, Brad Guzman, Nathan Delfouneso, Carlos Cuéllar, Gabriel Agbonlahor, Thomas Hitzlsperger, , Barry Bannan, (A rejuvenated Steven Ireland?)
Agree Villa fans?
