Top 10 of the Week – Football Songs
Music and football have a long serving link, acting as a catalyst for fans to get behind their team/ country. This week InTheStands picks out ten of our favourite anthems…
10. Adam and Joe – Football Song
Certainly parodic yet impulsively entertaining; Adam and Joe released this song in reaction to the terrible football songs of the past. This is in fact their second World Cup version and lyrically it’s fantastically terrible just like it’s original: “when I go see Spain I drink a lot of beer and cause trouble on the plane’.
9. Collapsed Lung – Eat my Goal
Not to be confused with Aqualung, this Indie-band dipped their toe into the limelight when this song was featured in the Coca Cola’s classic football campaign: Eat, Sleep, Drink and drink football. Years later this one-hit-wonder was also used by LMA Manager for their 2001 version of the game.
8. Shakira – Waka, Waka (This time for Africa)
Up-beat, with an African inspired jangle brought to the mainstream recently by Vampire Weekend, Waka, Waka flawlessly complements the colourful, bubbly vibes of the South Africa World Cup.
7. Dario G – Carnival De Paris
An atmospheric and fleeting orchestra based song that explodes into a Carnivalesque chant: a perfectly apt and exciting choice as the official France 1998 anthem.
6. Perry Como– Papa loves mambo
Recorded by Perry Como on August 31, 1954.You will remember this samba fuelled classic from the Joga Bonito Brazil vs. Portugal Nike ad. Olé!
5. Chumbawamba- Tubthumping
A song that epitomised the English spirit during the 1998 World Cup For the good: determination and pride; and the bad: Hooliganism. It was used by EA for their official World Cup 1998 game.
4. Bellini – Samba De Janeiro
Early Brazilian football was based on the samba style of dancing, with stars using their skills to their advantage when dribbling around opponents. This song capturing the Brazilian flair so vividly that it is rare not to hear this blasted on the PA systems at most grounds around the world.
3. Fat Les – Vindaloo
A song for the lager louts, from a band containing an eclectic mix of artist including Blur Basist Alex James , actor Keith Allen and artist Damien Hirst. The video was a parody of by The Verves Bitter Sweet Symphony” and featured Paul Kaye, Rowland Rivron, Ed Tudor-Pole, Matt Lucas and David Walliams
2. Lightning Seeds (Ft. David Baddiel and Frank Skinner) – Three Lions 96
The un-official song for the 1996 English European championship, yet in became an unadulterated classic – sung, even by German fans, throughout the completion. Since then the song was re- recorded and re-released in 1998 and remains a firm favourite among England fans.
1. New Order (Ft. John Barnes) – World in Motion
As an offset of Joy Division, New Order is Bernard Sumner, Peter Hook and Stephen Morris minus the deceased Ian Curtis. For the 1986 World Cup they recruited Liverpool Legend and Rap prodigy John Barnes as a guest vocalist: “There’s only one way to beat them, it’s round the back!” – Such wise words Barnsy.
