In The Stands’ Rolly Pelovangu picks out the Barclays Premier League’s top strikes this season ranging from explosive overhead kicks, voluptuous volleys and moments of sheer brilliance!

And so the curtain draws on another Premier League campaign. Widely acknowledged as not the best in terms of quality, the 2010/2011 season still enthused, enthralled and excited in many respects, not lest in terms of goals of which there were plenty.

Picking the cream of the crop was a difficult feat, yet after much deliberation here are five strikes which particularly stood out.

Gareth Bale vs Stoke City

When Zinedine Zidane volleyed home the winner in the 2002 Champions League final it was widely perceived to be one of the greatest strikes ever. Indeed, ‘Zizou’s’ moment of magic may never be emulated at least on the corresponding stage, yet Spurs’ Gareth Bale came very close with his left-footed peach away at Stoke. It was fantastic.

Dimitar Berbatov Overhead Kick vs Liverpool

The quiet Bulgarian settled a pulsating match with an equally pulsating overhead kick to not only settle a thrilling North East derby, but also complete his hat-trick.

Alex Freekick vs Arsenal

There are some things in life which are a cast iron guarantee. Death, taxes, Halley’s Comet, a Mourinho moan, Didier Drogba netting against Arsenal and an Alex piledriver of a freekick. The latter was proven on a warm September evening as the big Brazilian ripped the Arsenal net with a…well…piledriver of a freekick!

Wayne Rooney Overhead Kick vs Manchester City

One word: stupendous! Rooney settled a tight Manchester derby at Old Trafford with his moment of magic which inevitably won our Goal of the Month competition. Indeed, ‘Wazza’s’ overhead kick wins the In The Stands Premier League Goal of the Season.

Cheik Tiote Goal vs Arsenal

Perhaps the best match this season in terms of unpredictability, twist and turns and drama came at St James’ Park as Newcastle came from 4-0 down to draw 4-4 with a shell-shocked Arsenal. The pick of the goals came from midfielder Cheik Tiote whose left-footed screamer signaled the beginning of the end for Arsenal’s title charge.

Of worthy mention but not included are: Raul Meireles’ super strike away at Wolves, Samir Nasri’s classy spin-and-finish at home to Fulham and Rafael Van der Vaart’s finish following an outstanding Spurs counter-attack at Villa Park.
