Before last weekend, if someone had uttered ‘Mario Balotelli’ everyone in the room would cry, “what a cock”. However, as I alluded to in our first podcast, I believe that he is a phenomenal prospect…
This weekend he showed us glimpses of his true talent, with a fantastic display against Manchester United in the FA Cup. But it wasn’t that performance that has impressed me the most about the Italian striker…No…It is Balotelli’s ‘I will do whatever the fuck’ I want attitude.
He is a character, an enigma: Sparks of genius come with flashes of red mist and for some bizarre reason no-one makes allowances for this despite his tender age.
There have been some cracking stories about the boy since he arrived on these shores. For example, soon after he arrived in the country, he had an accident on his way to training. He was then breathalysed by police who enquired as to why he had £5000 in cash stored in his back-pocket. 20-year old Balotelli simply replied “Because I am rich.”
He has also displayed Bendtner-esque levels of arrogance by claiming no prior knowledge of Jack Wilshere who came runner up to him at the 2010 Young European Player of the Year awards;
“What’s his name? Wil … ? No, I don’t know him, but the next time I play against Arsenal I will keep a close eye on him,”
In the same interview, he ranked only Lionel Messi as better than him in the world: ”There’s only one that is a little stronger than me: Messi. All the others are behind me”
Balotelli behaves akin to most 20-year olds…like a pillock.
He regularly dines at San Carlo in Manchester and when he recognised Rooney-hooker Jenny Thompson, Balotelli taunted her with chants of “Rooney, Rooney”. She has since been banned…
He can often be found at the amusement arcade in the Trafford Centre – just like a normal 20-year old. Or at Knowsley Safari Park on Merseyside as he is a big lover of nature.
Yes, on occasion he does slip up properly, like sleeping with his girlfriends friend, whilst his girlfriend was asleep downstairs, or throwing darts at academy players. But remember he is only 20!
As you may have noticed I have harped on about Mario’s age purely because no-one else does. Wayne Rooney behaves like a spanner aged 26, yet their treatment during times of adversity is identical. The vast majority of twenty year old millionaire-players act like pricks and they’re not in the situation of being in a foreign country. His two red cards have been incredibly petulant, but this will disappear in time as Mario develops as a player and most importantly, as a man.
He has the raw attributes that could lead him to being one of the best, he’s quick, tall, powerful, skilful and a great finisher. Once Mario has been given a chance to grow up, I have no doubt that he will perform on a regular basis at the highest of levels.
Level headed?
Whilst Balotelli behaves like your average 20-year old, he appears to understand that he is in a privileged position. After a night ending with a £25,000 win at the casino with Chris Samba, Balotelli gave a homeless man £1000 of his winnings.
‘There’s a guy he always sees around town with ginger dreadlocks and a beard. He carries his possessions in two carrier bags.
‘He was outside the club in the early hours so Mario handed him a wad of notes after his big win. The tramp couldn’t believe his luck. It was enough to keep him going for months.’
‘Mario is really generous. He always hands £20 notes to the Big Issue boys without even taking the magazine,’ the source added.
from The Sun
A bit of class exuding from the young man and I’m sure this scenario won’t be repeated too often by other footballers.
As far as I’m concerned, Mario is still JUST a 20-year old! Has all the raw attributes to be a world-beater and appears to have a good heart inside him. A big thumbs up from me and he looks like a bargain at £24 million. The only issue now is finding a manager who can man-manage him properly by enhancing his talent and encouraging his maturity.
Time for everyone to cut this youngster some slack and make sure we keep him in England, as he one hell of an individual!…
