Sunderland have sacked manager Steve Bruce after a string of poor results the club have confirmed Wednesday evening.

The news has come somewhat as a shock to many Sunderland fans as well as fans from across the country as the first Premier League managerial casualty this season is claimed.
After a bad run of results this season, the Black Cats‘ board have made the decision in, quote; ‘the best interests of the club’ and decided to part company with the former Manchester United defender leaving the search for a new manager now open.
The club currently languish in 16th place in the League table and suffered a morale-sapping 2-1 home defeat to fellow relegation strugglers Wigan at the weekend piling more pressure on beleaguered boss Steve Bruce.
One win in eight matches was enough to convince the Sunderland hierarchy to ditch Bruce who admirably managed to achieve 10th and 13th place in the league in his only two full seasons at the club.
A statement from club chairman Ellis Short released on the official Sunderland website read:
“This has been a difficult time for everyone at Sunderland and is not a situation that any of us envisaged or expected to be in.
“It is my job as chairman to act in the best interests of our football club at all times and I can assure everyone that this is not a decision that I have taken lightly. Sadly results this season have simply not been good enough and I feel the time is right to make a change.
“Steve has acted with honesty and integrity throughout, which is testament to the character and commitment he has shown during his time at Sunderland.
“I would like to personally place on record my thanks to him for his significant contribution to our football club over the past two and a half years and everyone here at Sunderland naturally wishes him the very best for the future.
“I would also like to thank our fans, who have endured a trying start to the season. Their support continues to be the driving force behind our club and is vital as we now look to the future.”
So, were the board right to sack Steve Bruce, or is it another case of an impatient chairman acting too quickly and too ruthlessly? Let In The Stands know what you think…
