Wayne Rooney admitted that England have already got one foot in next summer’s European Championships after a resounding 3-0 win over Bulgaria on Friday night.
In a more-or-less faultless performance from Fabio Capello’s men, Rooney bagged a brace to add to Gary Cahill’s opener as England sailed to a comfortable 3-0 win in Sofia and all but seal their place in Euro 2012.
“We are almost there,” a confident Rooney was quoted as saying by The Guardian after the match.
Wales surprise win against second-placed Montenegro leaves England with a golden opportunity to open up a potentially decisive six-point lead at the top of Group G with an all British clash with Wales at Wembley still to come.
“Wales did us a big favour by beating Montenegro tonight,” Wazza stressed. “We’ve got one foot into the finals. If we win on Tuesday we will more or less have qualified and we are capable of doing that.”
Rooney – sporting his new hair makeover for the first time in a Three Lions shirt, ended a one-year barren spell with the national side after bagging his first goals since last year’s win over Switzerland.
“It felt good (to end the goal drought)” he revealed.
“It was a good performance from the whole team and we fully deserved the three points. I’m enjoying my football, I’ve got a hunger about me and I want to prove myself again.”
Still, an unperturbed Fabio Capello urged his side that despite the comfortable victory, there is still much room for improvement.
“We’ve got players with a lot of quality. They are very good technically,” the Italian pointed out.
“(However) we need to improve, press more without the ball. All these players who played this evening are really fast, and when they go towards the box they are very dangerous, but sometimes when there are openings without the ball, we need to improve!” he warned.
