Vincent Kompany was controversially dismissed by referee Chris Foy as Manchester United grabbed 3-2 win over Manchester City in a pulsating FA Cup 3rd Round clash.

The City captain went in for a challenge on United winger Nani in the 12th minute but referee Chris Foy pulled play back before showing Kompany a straight red-card despite contact with Nani being minimal.

Stunned, the Belgium international dejectedly trotted off surprised at a decision which quite frankly looked extremely harsh.

A super motivated United side were already 1-0 up at the time courtesy of Wayne Rooney’s superb header with Sir Alex Ferguson’s men going on to seal a narrow 3-2 victory and passage into the FA Cup 4th Round.

But was Vincent Kompany’s red card justified or not? Let In The Stands know what you think…

    yes

  • Chris Foy

    no LOLo

I say no. Just weeks ago Lampard had a two footed lunge on that Wolves player and got just a yellow – yet he made contact proper.

Kmpany didnt even touch Nani and Nani didnt even make out/think to dive thus legitimizing the tackle. Yes, he went to ground (Kompany that is), studs showed (a little) but a red – no way.

Foy ruined the game for City. What is the PL coming to. Cant even tackle even Keane sed it on ITV

  • Wayne Rooney

YES YES YES !!! REF YES!!

Ludicrous red card another top game wrecked by a referee simply not up to it. Nani is a ‘diver’ par excellant, and made nothing of it unlike Rooney and a couple of other Man Utd players near the referee.
Give yellow cards for waving imaginary cards, just like simulation, kicking the ball away and taking off your shirt.(heinous crimes).  Welbeck would have gone which would have levelled the numbers on this basis for trying to influence the ref.  Welbeck was looking for more than a penalty. Jones was terrible and was so lucky with the late handball.Surely Man City cannot successfully appeal It is only a short while since the last sending off against Man Utd. was upheld but no use when you have lost 5-0. Touch and go whether the boss sees out the season.Rumour has it that Bobby Charlton has looked out his boots.

yes, nani avoided  Kompany’s two footed tackle, if he did not he may have broke a leg.

It was a violation of two rules under the FA Laws of the Game, Law 12. So yes it was a definite sending off, common sense would dictate not to lunge with two feet, in the air with your studs showing. It was a silly tackle to make.

Kompany went for the ball and got all the ball. He got none of Nani. He did not run 30 yards and jump in.

The rule talks about jumping in from a distance and at speed.

The many angles of TV replay clearly show Kompany’s torso was always in contact with the ground he was not in the air, he was in control.

The tackle was very low, not studs up over the top and it was also at quite a low speed. Kompanys feet only raised a little after he had already won the ball.

Nano didn’t even notice it, didn’t jump out of the way, he simply carried on playing. I’ve seen some bone crunching tackles in my time. This was never a red card.

I suggest if you feel it is read rule 12, see that even within the wording their are words like should, there’s no automatic sending off, firm action, not ultimate sanction (referees can still have some discretion and use some common sense). Then also watch the replay from the front with Kompany coming towards you and the low down reverse views in slow motion which show he is 6 inches off the ground with studs down collecting the ball and not Nani.

Do we really want our game to decend into dives and red cards. Personally I want to see some physical element retained, common sense to prevail and major games played 11 v 11.

Law 12 talks about jumping in from a distance, at speed and then suggests firm action. A yellow and a serious talking to is firm action if you really feel it necessary, but seriously how can you say Kompany jumped from distance at speed?

He was low, slowish, under the ball not over it.

  • Lisa Gardiner

NAND did nothing of the sort, he didn’t really notice it and carried on playing.
