Ronaldo Bags 40th League Goal as Madrid Crush Almeria 8-1
Cristiano Ronaldo broke an old-standing La Liga goal record after bagging is 40th league goal of the season as Real Madrid smashed bottom side Almeria 8-1.
The Portuguese superstar surpassed the likes of Lionel Messi, the Brazilian Ronaldo and former record holders Hugo Sanchez and Telmo Zarra to become the most prolific goalscorer in La Liga history.
In a show of absolute dominance Los Blancos gave their fans a resounding sign-off to an otherwise disappointing season by dishing out an 8-1 thrashing to already relegated Almeria. On loan striker Emmanuel Adebayor bagged a hat-trick, with Karim Benzema weighing in with two strikes before substitute Joselu came off the bench to complete the rout.
Speaking after the game, ‘Ronnie’ was thankful to his Madrid team-mates who he saw as instrumental in enabling him to lift his first ever ‘Pichichi’ trophy – awarded to the League’s top goalscorer.
“I have to say thank you to all my team-mates. The Pichichi is for all of us. They have helped me reach the 40 goals,” he told Canal Plus after the match.
“We played a great game and we reached 102 goals. It’s not impossible to repeat that feat, but it will be very difficult.
“It’s not easy to score 102 in a season so, I have to congratulate my team-mates. The season did not go as we had hoped for, but the coach wanted us to finish the campaign with a lot of goals so that we can start the next term with ambition,” ‘CR9’ added.
The result means that Jose Mourinho’s men end the 2010/2011 campaign on 92 points, as well as breaking the 100 goal mark in a season for the first time ever and despite finishing runners-up to champions Barcelona for a third successive season, confidence will be high going into next year as the capital based club chase a first La Liga crown since 2008.
