The winter of discontent continues at Chelsea as players openly defied coach Andre Villas-Boas’ decision to bar Nicolas Anelka from the club’s Christmas dinner.

The growing unrest and souring relations at Chelsea sunk to new depths over the New Years weekend when under-fire coach Andre Villas-Boas barred departing striker Nicolas Anelka from the club’s Christmas lunch at the Cobham training complex.
The sulky Frenchman is set to leave Stamford Bridge to join Chinese Super League side Shanghai Shenhua. But ‘Nico’ is a favourite amongst his peers who were said to be angered by AVB’s decision to banish and exile him.
In an open show of defiance, several Chelsea first team stars made a public show of their support for Anelka by taking him out to a fancy Chinese restaurant in London’s super expensive Mayfair area instead.
According to The Sun, a senior Chelsea source revealed:
“The players thought banning Nico from the Christmas lunch was just petty and spiteful.
“So some of the lads got together and took him for a meal at China Tang in Mayfair.
“Apparently, they had a great time and they didn’t care if the manager knew all about it,” the source added.
The Blues were sensationally booed off following Saturday’s 3-1 defeat at home to Aston Villa which saw them drop to fifth in the Premier League table – a full 11 points behind joint leaders Manchester City and Manchester United.
