Porto record their 25th Primeira Liga after beating bitter rivals Benfica

After a dominant season, under the guise of Luís Villas-Boas, Porto have won the The Liga ZON Sagres after they beat all-time record holders Benfica (32 titles) in a fiercely contested affair…

A Fredy Guarín cross-come-shot and a Hulk penalty was enough to seal a 2-1 victory at the Luz Stadium in a game strewed with errors.

The first of these a nightmare spill from Benfica goalkeeper Roberto, who failed to deal with a routine driven Guarin cross.

Unfortunately for Benfica, Roberto failed to redeem himself and with the score deadlocked at 1-1 his poorly timed challenge on Falco gave the referee no choice but to award a penalty expertly dispatched by Hulk.

Equally clumsy was Porto’s Nicolás Otamendi who sacrificed the lead in the fifteenth minute when he pulled down Franco Jara in the box. The spot-kick was then dispatched by fellow argentine Javier Saviola.

With both sides battling for superiority tempers flared and each team finished the match with 10 men. First Otamendi was dismissed for a second bookable offense then Benfica substitute Oscar Cardozo received a straight red for lashing out at Fernando Belluschi with five minutes left to play.

Benfica’s frustration did not end there, nor was it exclusive to the 11 players on the field. In fact the club quite unsportingly cut the floodlights and turned on the sprinklers to douse any celebration from their rivals.

Porto, who have five games to spare, are now aiming for an unbeaten season; a feat only completed by a Portuguese club once before.
