Manchester United have completed the signing of Blackburn defender Phil Jones for £16.5million with the England under-21 star having signed a five-year contract with the Premier League champions.
A statement on the official Manchester United website confirmed the news with Phil Jones himself still on international duty with the England U21 team who are competing in the European Championship.
The 19 year-old centre-back passed a medical last week, however, needed to finalize the last wranglings of a five-year contract before the deal could be confirmed.
Former club Blackburn Rovers will receive £16.5million for Jones who has made over 40 appearances for his boyhood club and helped the Lancashire-based side consolidate their Premier League status this season.
A statement released by Blackburn Rovers on the club’s official website read:
“Much as we would love him to stay on with us – and we made all efforts to convince him to stay – Phil has to finally follow his heart.
“We are extremely happy with his contribution to our team and we wish him all the very best in his future endeavours.”
