Manchester United clinched a record-breaking 19th Premier League crown after securing a 1-1 draw against Blackburn at Ewood Park.
Wayne Rooney scored the decisive equaliser with 17 minutes left on the clock after Javier Hernandez was felled by Blackburn goalkeeper Paul Robinson. The draw meant that the Red Devils moved onto 77 points, seven ahead of Chelsea, and mathematically brings to an end a gruelling 2010/2011 Premier League campaign as far as top spot is concerned.
In a match in which Sir Alex Ferguson’s men needed only one point to leapfrog Liverpool’s League title record haul of 18, the newly crowned champions fell behind as early as the 20th minute when Brett Emerton capitalized on Tomasz Kuszczak’s (deputizing for Edwin Van der Sar) mistake to steer the ball into the United net.
United improved after the break despite not creating much in terms of chances. Nevertheless, it takes luck as well as skill to win such a competitive championship and indeed the Old Trafford side got theirs in the 73rd minute.
Paul Robinson was adjudged to have brought down a rapid Javier Hernandez and despite the Rovers players frantic appeals, the referee after careful consultation with his linesman awarded the visitors a penalty.
Incidentally, minutes earlier Martin Olsson had struck the post for the hosts, but an unfazed Wayne Rooney emphatically swept the spot-kick into the Rovers net for his 11th Premier League goal of the season and Fergie’s men held on comfortably to clinch their 19th League crown.
