Javier Hernandez’s header cancelled out Steven Gerrard’s opener as Liverpool and Manchester United played out an entertaining 1-1 draw
In a match which saw Wayne Rooney demoted to the bench and Reds captain Steven Gerrard return to first team action for the first time in 7 months, it was the champions who emerged the happier of the two sides as they ended a run of three straight defeats at Anfield to nick a 1-1 draw.
After a largely uneventful first half which saw little it terms of clear cut chances, Liverpool won a freekick on the edge of the box when United defender Rio Ferdinand was adjudged to have fouled Charlie Adam.
Steven Gerrard then dispatched the freekick into the United net to put Kenny Dalglish’s men ahead with just over twenty minutes left on the clock.
Sir Alex Ferguson responded by throwing on Wayne Rooney and Javier Hernandez and it was ‘Chicharito’ who bagged the equaliser when he nodded in Danny Welbeck’s flick-on in the 80th minute.
Still, the hosts almost retook the lead soon after but striker Dirk Kuyt was denied by David de Gea in the United goal before Jordan Henderson headed over late on as the match ended in a 1-1 draw.
