Lionel Messi Is Average & Will Be A Sub To Maradona and Cruyff!
Former Argentine international Hugo Gatti has launched a scathing attack on Barcelona’s Lionel Messi by stating that he would be a ‘bench-warmer’ in the days of Diego Maradona and Johan Cruyff.

Speaking to Radio La Red Gatti – who made 18 international appearances for Argentina between 1967 and 1977 – sought to bring Lionel Messi (considered by many to be one of the games’ finest ever players) back-down to Earth by insisting that the Barcelona striker is not as good as people think.
“The best player ever is without any doubt Pele. After that you have Alfredo [Di Stefano], [Johan] Cruyff, and Diego [Maradona],” Gatti said.
“In those times, Messi would have been a substitute rather than a star.
‘The Flea’ is the hot favourite to win the Ballon d’Or for a third successive season with Barca compatriots Xavi and Andres Iniesta amongst the duos challenging the Argentine superstar.
Still, an unperturbed Gatti dismissed the star-like status besetting the two Spaniards as well as Messi himself, before suggesting that all three would have been nothing but bench-warmers in previous decades.
“All of these Barcelona players who say they play for the best team in the world would have been bench-warmers in the times of Maradona and Cruyff!” he said.
Strong stuff eh?! But here is why we at In The Stands believe Lionel Messi should win this year’s Ballon d’Or.
