La Liga Round-Up: Barca Edge Past Gijon To Go Top As Madrid Put 4 Past Espanyol
Barcelona moved to the top of La Liga after a hard fought 1-0 win over Sporting Gijon at the Estadio Molinon courtesy of a first half strike by Adriano.
The champions were far from their imperious best after a superb 5-0 midweek thrashing of BATE Borisov, but managed to squeeze past a determined Sporting Gijon side.
Still, a satisfied Pep Guardiola congratulated his side after the game.
“We found a great Sporting Gijon, with many people at the back, very close to each other,” he told Spanish reporters.
“There were not any spaces because they closed down very well. Every time we come off a Champions League game, we have found things hard for us. We played well in the first 30 minutes.
“Then, we were not brilliant because of Sporting’s good game, but we controlled and they did not create any chances,” he added.
The result however was overshadowed by an injury to defender Eric Abidal with a suspected hamstring injury. Meanwhile Real Madrid kept up the pressure on Pep Guardiola’s men with a 4-0 rout away at Espanyol with Gonzalo Higuain bagging a hat-trick.
Despite the win, Jose Mourinho’s men stay in third place on 13 points, two behind their arch rivals and one behind surprise outfit Levante who still remain unbeaten.
