In The Stands’ Rolly Pelovangu jumps ahead of the queues, grabs a packet of milk and cookies and brings forth a comprehensive review of Konami’s Pro Evolution Soccer 2012 – it’s a screamer!

In a week which saw the release of the mightily impressive FIFA 2012, Konami’s latest Pro Evolution Soccer release has much to live up to.
Of course the comparisons and the differences between both games will forever dominate any objective reviews, but let it be said now, PES 2012 gives FIFA 2012 a run for its money.
Available on Xbox 360, PS3, Wii, as well as PC, Pro Evo continues to be universally available for gamers on all formats. Like FIFA, fans will be asked to cough up some £44 and although pricey, it is well worth the dosh.
Gameplay
Amongst the most pertinent aspects of the Pro Evolution Soccer 2012 is the improved passing and player movement. There is a feeling of realism pervading matches hitherto unseen in past Pro Evo outings.
The new off-the-ball player control feature works – not greatly – but it works nevertheless. This of course means more depth and craft can be added to things such as set pieces and dead-ball situations.
Still, it is a tad tricky to fully utilize meaning many hours on the training mode as you perfect controlling and receiving another player whilst simultaneously moving them into a better position.

Realism
The realism contained within the game is, in short, tremendous. This has and continues to be a standout feature of the Pro Evo Series since the ISS days.
The graphics are superb – that’s a given, what is more laudable is the player likeness. Cristiano Ronaldo’s fast feet, Robinho’s slender built and lack of power, Ashley Cole’s tenacity and Andres Iniesta’s glue-feet all stick out giving gamers a feeling of more control and game appreciation.
The improved player AI also leads to an appreciative take on things such as crossing, shooting, dribbling, passing, shot-stopping and most of all goal scoring!
The continued UEFA Champions League licence is a further boost to the game as are the stadium likenesses and referee flexibility.

Multiplayer & Game Modes
Perhaps the outstanding factor of Pro Evolution 2012. Hours of fun can be had with the multiplayer mode as the need to become ‘king of the hill’ grips all fans whether playing within the confines of their room or taking on the world via the online mode.
All the top sides are present, formations can be tweaked and saved, Jon Champion’s commentary is good and the atypical tournaments are present; including the European Championships (for all those England fans who want to lead The Three Lions to Euro glory!).
It is surprising to see that PES 2012 has not quite created the buzz nor the excitement it obviously warrants. FIFA 2012 has a lot to do with that. Still, for all Konami fans, PES 2012 will not disappoint.
It is, without doubt one of the best ever releases in the Pro Evo series since its Playstation 2 heyday and well worth a punt even for all diehard FIFA fans out there.
