Goals by Mirko Vucinic and Claudio Marchisio gave Juventus a priceless 2-1 victory over Inter Milan in the Derby D’Italia as Antonio Conte’s men sent out a warning to the rest of Serie A.
Could this be the year, the first year since 2003 when the Old Lady reassumes her position at the summit of Serie A?
It sure seems like it as Juventus – that is Antonio Conte’s Juventus – continue to weigh in with resolute, championship winning performances.
The latest coming at none other then in the lair of their eternal foes Inter Milan in Serie A’s first Derby D’Italia. The success of the Nerazzurri in recent years has been nothing but gut wrenching for Juve fans with Inter Milan President Massimo Moratti takes every opportunity to lambast their club in the wake of Calciopoli-gate.
Successive coaches have tried to restore the glory days in Turin; a list including the likes of Luigi Del Nieri, current Inter Milan boss Claudio Ranieri and club legend Ciro Ferrara. All attempted but all failed.
Alas, it came as a bit of a surprise when another Juve legend – Antonio Conte, was given the reins and so far at least it is looking like an inspired move.
Qualification for the UEFA Champions League was the Italian’s main goal with a title challenge being deemed a ‘bonus’, however, the way things are working out, a season without the Scudetto could turn out to be a real disappointment for the passionate tifosi over at the Juventus Arena.
Conte’s men have already dispatched champions AC Milan 2-0 in Turin and after beating former champions Inter, find themselves on 19 points after 9 games, two ahead of their closest challengers.
With confidence and self-belief pulsating through his team Conte will be keen to keep things going and if (and that is a big if) his side can maintain the kind of form they have shown just four months into the season, then those previously-stripped Serie A titles of 2004/2005 and 2005/2006 will soon be forgotten as Juve once again bag the Scudetto crown – cleanly this time around.
