English referee Howard Webb was caught in the middle of ugly scenes as Greek hooligans attacked Croatia fans during their crucial Euro 2012 Group F qualifier in Athens.
Webb was forced to suspend play for a full six minutes as officials, security and stadium guards struggled to contain a rambustious Greek crowd.
The assembled Croatian fans were pelted with ripped up seats, lit-up petrol bombs, as well as pieces of debris with some Greek thugs even managing to storm their way into the away section as the trouble spilled over.
After restoring some measure of calm, the potential Group F decider eventually resumed with goals by Theofanis Gekas and Celtic’s Giorgio Samaras earning the hosts a 2-0 win to send them top of the group with one match to play.
