Underfire Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger fumed at suggestion that his future at the Emirates is in serious doubt after he was given an ominous vote of confidence from club chief executive Ivan Gazidis.
Frustrated Arsenal fans also voted with their feet as just 46,539 turned up to watch the Gunners’ 3-1 Carling Cup Third Round victory over Shrewsbury Town on Tuesday night.
The poor attendance was accompanied by swathes of empty seats across the stadium and marked the lowest ever attendance at the Emirates Stadium since the stadium opened in 2006.
Wenger’s men struggled to contain League Two Shrewsbury side who, to much surprise, took an early first-half lead before goals by Kieron Gibbs, new signing Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and on loan midfielder Yossi Benayoun resorted parity as the hosts ran out eventual 3-1 winners.
The performance however impressed nobody and with the Gunners facing a relegation six-pointer with Bolton on Saturday, the black clouds encircling Wenger show no signs of abating.
When promoted about his future after the game in the wake of Ivan Gazidis’ dreaded vote of confidence, a spiky Arsene Wenger snapped;
“I’m not bothered by this speculation,” he fumed.
“Whether I work here for the next 10 years or the next day I will let others assess the situation.
“I accept critics and I do not say it doesn’t matter that people criticize us. I prefer it when they say I am good. I have kept them in the Champions League for 14 years and I wish it lasts another 14 years,” the Frenchman added.
