Chelsea striker Fernando Torres has asked his Chelsea team-mates to provide him with faster and better service as he seeks to finally net some goals for the club.
The lost Spaniard has had a torrid time at Stamford Bridge after his £50million move from Liverpool in January and has netted just one league goal in 21 matches for the Blues.
Looking particularly slow, gangly and distinctively off-pace, ‘El Nino’ presents a conundrum for Chelsea boss Andre Villas-Boas who has already stated that his patience for the former Atletico Madrid star is far from infinite.
“He didn’t lose his talent talent because he’s played 21 games and only scored one goal,” AVB was quoted as saying by The Daily Mirror.
“The talent is there and the question is regaining confidence. That comes from training and from time and finding the back of the net, so we have
“But it can’t compromise the team,” he warned. “The moment it compromises the team it has to come to an end.”
However, Torres refuses to be scapegoated and has told fellow team-mates to supply him with better and faster service to suit his striking needs.
“When I changed clubs, I knew it was going to be a slow process, although I didn’t expect it to be so long,” he said.
“Chelsea is, between the English teams, maybe the least English. That’s because of the kind of player Chelsea has — an older player, who plays very slow, who has a lot of possession — and that’s what the club is trying to change now,” he added.
His comments are likely to be picked up by the likes of Frank Lampard and Florent Malouda; both not being blessed with the best of pace whose aging years appear to be coming to light as the Blues fail to spark early on in the new campaign.
Furthermore, with the Chelsea first team setup to the likeness of Didier Drogba as opposed to Torres himself, it would take a transformation of the Blues’ tactical system and perhaps a revamp in playing style to adequately fit the 27-year-old in at Stamford Bridge.
It is of course something which Torres hopes for and the signing of fellow Spaniard and World Cup winning winger Juan Mata has left the Chelsea number 9 feeling a lot more positive about his future at SW9.
“The arrival of Mata is going to give another pace to the team,” Torres stressed gleefully.
“Daniel Sturridge, who has been ruled out for a while, is also an incredible player — maybe the one that has surprised me the most since I came here.
“In the next matches, you will see another pace and I hope the midfield will adapt to that pace. That is what you need in the Premier League. If not, then the teams do not work.”
