FC Porto have denied that current boss Andre Villas-Boas is set to join Chelsea amidst mounting speculation that the highly-rated coach is to be unveiled as the new Blues boss.
According to reports, Chelsea are set to move for the current FC Porto boss with The Times in particular reporting that Jose Mourinho’s former assistant is ready to leave the Portuguese champions and follow in the ‘Special One’s’ footsteps and sign for Chelsea.
Villas-Boas led his FC Porto side to a historic treble last season as his men went unbeaten in their domestic league, and also bagged the Portuguese Cup, as well as the Europa League with a 1-0 win over Braga in Dublin.
In response to reports that the sought-after coach is set to take the reigns in the Chelsea hotseat, FC Porto have released a statement on the club’s official website, denying that any sort of deal has been agreed, despite the fact that bookmakers have stopped taking bets on Villas-Boas being the next Blues boss.
The official statement read as follows:
“Futebol Clube do Porto, SAD, at the request of CMVM, come to inform the market that coach Andre Villas-Boas, just like several players in the squad, has a release clause,” the statement read.
“Up to this date, this society has not yet received any information that this clause would be triggered.”
Nevertheless, FC Porto President Pinta da Costa, has admitted that he will be unable to prevent Villas-Boas from moving to England if his release fee is met.
He said: “Villas-Boas has a contract and a clause of €15 million [£13.2m]. If someone deposits €15 million into our account and he wants to go, we can not do anything because it is something that is contractually specified,” he was forced to admit.
Chelsea are keen to name their new coach as soon as possible with the new season quickly dawning on the former champions who, under owner Roman Abramovich, will be keen to sink their teeth into the transfer market as soon as possible. It is thought that the club will firstly wait on the appointment of a new manager before releasing the funds needed to acquire their summer targets for the season ahead.
