Portuguese star Cristiano Ronaldo faces a nervous two-legged play-off tie in order to seal his countries place in Euro 2012 after Portugal lost 2-1 to Denmark in their Group H decider.
An early goal by midfielder Michael Krohn-Dehli and a strike by Sunderland striker Nicklas Bendtner just past the hour proved decisive as Morten Olsen’s men secured the victory they needed to ensure top spot in the winner-takes-all-clash in Copenhagen.
Cristiano Ronaldo did grab an injury-time consolation goal via a superb freekick but it proved inconsequential meaning Paulo Bento’s men have to go through the uncertainty of a two-legged play-off, in an unseeded draw to secure their place for next summer’s European Championships.
Of course the thought of Ronnie and Co. not being present in Ukraine/Poland seems incomprehensible given their stature in world football but it sure remains a realistic possibility. We have Nicklas Bendtner to thank for that!
