Former FC Porto coach Andres Villas-Boas has finalized the last remnants of his contract as he prepares to take over the reins as the new Chelsea boss.
Chelsea owner Roman Abramovich matched FC Porto’s £13.5million release clause sparking Andres Villas-Boas’ resignation after guiding the Portuguese champions to a historic four trophies this season.
It is believed that Villas-Boas met with Abramovich last weekend and agreed, in principle, to assume the Stamford Bridge hotseat thus emulating the footsteps of former Blues boss and mentor Jose Mourinho.
Chelsea have since released an official statement via the club’s website, confirming that they are indeed in talks with Villas-Boas over personal terms.
The statement reads: “We note that the release clause of Andre Villas-Boas has been activated. We can at this time confirm our interest in him and hope to reach agreement with him on personal terms and make a further announcement in the near future.”
The 33-year-old informed FC Porto of his decision to quit the two-time European champions via fax on Tuesday and is ready to become Chelsea’s eighth manager in seven seasons following the dismissal of Carlo Ancelotti in May.
FC Porto have since appointed assistant boss Vitor Pereira as their new manager with Porto officials said to not be best pleased by Villas-Boas’ decision to abscond to South-West London.
