Carlos Tevez and Manchester City have become the subject of a Greek match-fixing scandal.
A Greek court is examining evidence that Manchester City’s Europa League game against Greek club Aris Thessaloniki in February was the target of an illegal betting scandal.
Extracts of a phone conversation in which Aris midfielder Kostas Mendrinos is heard suggesting he may ask his current team-mate and former Man City reject Nery Castillo to persuade City superstar Carlos Tevez to let the Greek side kick off have been seized.
According to the Sun, Mendrinos allegedly said on tape: “I will speak in all probability with Castillo to go and get Tevez, who is the captain, and we will also have told Koke (Aris captain) probably here for kick-off.”
The Greek police are believed to have obtained the video after they bugged the phones of suspected participants, namely, the players, staff and club officials believed to be involved in the match-fixing allegations.
Tevez himself along with Manchester City deny any knowledge of bribery and match-fixing with the FA Cup holders pointing out that the Argentine striker has never even played with Mexican Nery Castillo.
Incidentally, City kicked-off the match with the toss itself being won by the Greek side. Koke, the captain, did not even feature during the match.
The investigation continues into the plot to bribe Tevez.
