Aston Villa striker Gabriel Agbonlahor has told Aston Villa fans that they need to back their new manager Alex McLeish after widespread criticism of his appointment in the Villa hotseat.
McLeish caused much controversy after he made a controversial managerial switch from relegated Birmingham City to arch-rivals Aston Villa this week with sections of Villa fans openly protesting the Scot’s appointment.
Despite the resistance and controversy, Aston Villa striker Gabriel Agbonlahor has pleaded with Villa fans to give the new coach an opportunity in the Villa dugout as the club seek to put the controversial switch behind them.
“At Birmingham his team had to play a certain way and some Villa supporters seem to be worried about that kind of style because it’s not Villa’s way,” Agbonlahor was quoted as saying by Goal.com.
“But with the talented group of attacking players he’ll have at his disposal here, it will be a lot different and I’m sure that’s another reason why he’s taking this challenge.
Aston Villa had a poor season last term, however, Agbonlahor is confident that with the right coaching, the necessary patience and with McLeish’s managerial skills guiding them, the team will have a much better season this time around.
“He will have a really good group of players to work with here, a strong squad and I see exciting times ahead, I really do,” he said.
“To those Villa fans who don’t seem to be happy with his appointment, my message is simply to give him a chance and see what he can do. He’ll do well here. He’ll do a good job for the club,” he ended.
