Following his release from Birmingham City, Lee Bowyer has been handed a one-year contract by Championship club Ipswich Town.
The 34-year-old had been linked with a return to former club Leeds United earlier in the summer, but it is the Tractor Boys that have secured his signature on a free transfer.
Following the move, Bowyer has already expressed his determination to help launch a promotion push at Portman Road. The former Newcastle midfielder said: “I’m looking forward to trying to get Ipswich back in the Premier League.”
Ipswich boss Jewell added: “We’re obviously delighted to have signed a player of Lee’s quality. Anyone who has seen Lee play over the years knows he is a winner and he will bring that winning mentality into our dressing-room.”
This is certainly an interesting coup for Ipswich who suffered a disappointing campaign last season. Bowyer brings with him Premier League experience, but also a controversial character that means he isn’t the most popular professional footballer amongst those placing a free bet regularly.
However, he was excellent during his two years at Birmingham and if he can stay fit, he will add value to the Ipswich squad much like Jimmy Bullard did for them last season.
The Ipswich squad ahead of the new campaign is certainly starting to shape up. Bowyer joins fellow new signings Michael Chopra, Nathan Ellington and Ivar Ingimarsson.
With the exception of Chopra, all of these players are above the age of 30, so the direction Jewell is going in is clear to see. He wants to combine the young players he already has at the club with some more experienced professionals.
There is no doubt that Ipswich have a tough task ahead of them if they are to launch a promotion bid though. Those placing free bets note how the Championship is likely to be more competitive than ever with several teams aiming for automatic promotion.
Ipswich are in a group of teams that are hoping to improve on the previous season enough to make a play-off challenge. Something they are hoping the signing of Bowyer will help them achieve.
