Real Madrid winger Cristiano Ronaldo bagged his 100th goal for the club as Jose Mourinho’s men dispatched Olympique Lyon 2-0 at the Stade Gerland to book their place in the last 16.
The nine-time winners were never really tested with a rather subdued Gerland crowd forced to acknowledge the prowess, vigour, tenacity and ruthlessness of the men in white.
As ever, winger Cristiano Ronaldo stole the show as his two goals sealed the victory – the first coming from a well placed free kick, the second from the penalty spot.
100 goals in 105 matches and still going strong is the feeling that emerged mainly from the match which saw Los Blancos seal their place in the last 16.
A delighted Cristiano Ronaldo was quick to thank his tram-mates and coach Jose Mourinho having reached a pivotal landmark in his career with the Spanish giants.
“I didn’t expect to score my 100th goal so soon,” the 26-year-old told the official Real Madrid website after the game on Wednesday.
“I’d like to thank my team-mates and the manager [Jose Mourinho], who gives me the chance to play and grow as a player and as a person.”
In the other group game, Ajax thumped Dinamo Zagreb 4-0 at the Amsterdam Arena to move second in the group on 7 points, three ahead of Lyon who they are due to play at the Stade Gerland on Matchday 5.
