VIDEO: Real Madrid vs Barcelona: Last 3 El Clasico’s At The Santiago Bernabeu
Real Madrid and Barcelona meet again in El Clasico at the Santiago Bernabeu and In The Stands looks back to their previous three matches between the pair.
The Santiago Bernabeu…scene of some terrific, if not controversial meetings between Real Madrid and Barcelona.
Here are the last three clashes between the pair and if they are anything to go by, Saturday’s match should also be a thriller.
Real Madrid 2-2 Barcelona, Spanish Super Cup, August 2011
The Spanish Super Cup in August is meant to politely usher in a new season, but politeness was the last thing on anybodies lips when Barca came to town.
Despite playing fabulously at times, hosts Real Madrid were undone by two Barcelona goals on the counter-attack, the first being a rasping curling effort by David Villa.
Xabi Alonso equalized for 2-2 before Jose Mourinho’s men had a blatant penalty appeal ignored but the damage was already done.
Pep Guardiola’s team of champions won the second-leg 3-2 thanks to Lionel Messi’s volley at the death and thus lifted another Spanish Super Cup.
Real were left thinking what if as Mourinho gouged out the eyes of a Barca coaching staff.
Real Madrid 0-2 Barcelona, UEFA Champions League Semi-Final 1st Leg, May 2011
A match for the annuals and one of the greatest ‘El Clasico’s’ ever was settled by Lionel Messi whose two late goals – the second being a slaloming-run, Maradona-style past five Madrid players got the whole continent on its feet gasping for words.
Barcelona would then go on to draw 1-1 in the 2nd-leg before thrashing Manchester United 3-1 in the final at Wembley. Madrid cried foul play before licking their very sore wounds.
Real Madrid 1-1 Barcelona, League, April 2011
A feisty League encounter saw Real Madrid defender Raul Albiol sent off for fouling David Villa when the Spanish striker was through on goal.
The match was the first of the famous ‘quadruple round of matches’ and as Lionel Messi struck home from the spot to give Barca the lead, things looked ominous for hosts Real Madrid.
That was until Marcelo’s dive ensured that Ronaldo’s equalizing penalty shared the spoils although in hindsight it was a match Jose Mourinho’s men needed to win as Barca romped to a third successive La Liga crown.
