The possibility of Manchester United facing off against Real Madrid in the last 16 has increased and In The Stands’ Rolly Pelovangu warns that it is one match United will want to avoid!

After Manchester United’s game with Benfica had ended, the typical post-match analysis focused upon the previously un-thought of possibility that last season’s runners-up could be heading for an early exit from this season’s Champions League.
The idea was quickly jettisoned as pundits up-and-down the land backed Sir Alex Ferguson’s men to grab the solitary point they need in Basel come Matchday 6 to seal their place in the last 16 for a sixth successive season.
All good then? Well, not quite. It was then pointed out that there was a significant chance that United could finish second in their Group C pool.
The question is, why was this such a debating point considering that the 2008 winners are after all one of Europe’s finest outfits? The reply comes in two words and is short, stark, severe and scary…Real Madrid.
We all know how it works by now. Group winners play group runners-up and should Sir Alex Ferguson’s men finish as runners-up in their group, the possibility of facing Jose Mourinho’s all-conquering Real Madrid side is very real indeed.

“If we get a big team in the next stage, it’s not a problem,” said a confident Nani after Manchester United’s laboured 2-2 draw. He would say that wouldn’t he?!
“We have a big ambition to get to the final and you have to play these teams anyway.
“We’ve made it difficult, but sometimes it’s difficult playing every game with a different team,” he added.
Destiny seems to have it written in the stars; a return to Old Trafford for Cristiano Ronaldo, another Fergie vs Mourinho last 16 clash – a la 2004 and 2009 – and a two-legged tie which no football fan on planet Earth should miss.
Make no mistake about it this Madrid side – Jose Mourinho’s new-look, baby-faced outfit – are formidable.
Racked and bitter by the well documented success of eternal rivals Barcelona over the past 7 years in which the Catalans have won 3 Champions Leagues, 5 La Liga titles, the World Club Cup and collected a treble to boot amongst many other trophies such as the Spanish and European Super Cup, the hunger to succeed is driving through the Spanish capital like a suped-up BMW M3 on the M25.
The ease in which the nine-time champions cut through Dinamo Zagreb, Olympique Lyon and Ajax in their group, as well as the number of teams who have been on the wrong end of a Madrid humiliation domestically this season is frightening.
Moreover, United have a poor record against Los Blancos in Europe’s elite cup competition and with memories still fresh of the double beating they receiving at the hands of Barcelona in 2009 and 2011 respectively, a super-motivated, technically superior Spanish outfit is the last thing Red Devil fans will want come the last 16 stage.
Let In The Stands tell you now…Real Madrid are the true UEFA Champions League favourites and ARE TO BE AVOIDED AT ALL COSTS!
