Simply amazing was one short way in which you could describe Lionel Messi’s individual effort against Real Madrid during an incident filled Champions League semi-final clash at the Santiago Bernabeu.

Having already been thrashed 5-0 at the Camp Nou in the league, Jose Mourinho’s men adopted a more cautious approach during the semi-final first-leg, although all began to fall awry when no-nonsense makeshift midfielder Pepe was red carded for a foul on Daniel Alves.

Earlier, Messi ghosted in between the Madrid defence to turned in Ibrahim Afellay’s brilliant cross to put Barcelona ahead, before embarking on a stupendous run, jinking past a statuesque Madrid defence and then slotting home with his weaker foot as the world saluted a true genius at work.

A great goal? You bet!
