Robert Earnshaw: ‘I’m Pissed Off I Missed That Chance’
Wales striker Robert Earnshaw could not hide his disappointment after missing an open goal during Wales’ 1-0 defeat to England at Wembley on Tuesday night.
With 15 minutes left on the clock, the Cardiff striker found himself free at the back post with the goal at his mercy however, instead of ripping the back of the net, he contrived to balloon the ball high over the bar to the aghast of his team-mates and horrified coach Gary Speed.
The visitors – ranked 117th in the world – went on to lose 1-0 as their faint qualification hopes for Euro 2012 were all but distinguished.
Reflecting on that miss, a downtrodden Earnshaw could not hide his anger and disappointment and admitted that he cannot bear to relive the moment.
“For me personally I am devastated,” he told reporters after the match.
“To say the least I am p***ed off and annoyed. I won’t watch it again – no chance. I just hope I get another chance here at Wembley in the future.
“I know I should have scored and my team-mates know I should have scored. I should have equalised. I am not one of those to hide.”
Still, the Welshman took heart in his sides’ show of spirit and team unity which, for long spells, trumped their hosts.
“I should have scored, simple as that. But for the bigger picture is it is brilliant for me to have chances at Wembley and this team has really progressed tonight,” he affirmed.
