This week Liverpool completed the signing of Sunderland midfielder Jordan Henderson who is widely regarded as one of English football’s most promising youngsters. But having eeked out his reputation in the mid-table struggles, In The Stand’s Rolly Pelovangu examines just how good the £20million man is.
“I’m over the moon, overjoyed to be here and I’m really looking forward to it,” a humbled Jordan Henderson told the official Liverpool website after completing his £20million switch from Sunderland.
“I was flattered to know Liverpool were interested in me and, once I knew, it was a massive decision for me to make but also a massive opportunity.
“Coming to a massive club like Liverpool, there is always going to be competition. Hopefully I can keep working hard, keep improving, and get my chance on the pitch.
“I cannot wait to play at Anfield in front of the Liverpool fans and everything. I’m just excited and I want to get going,” he added.
And so he should be. Jordan Henderson is, as suggested, a very promising young, up-and-coming star in the English game and has the necessary attributes, coupled with the adequate mental qualities needed to excel at the highest level. Even his stats on Pro Evolution Soccer 2011 deem so!
Jordan Henderson Profile
Having broken into the Sunderland first-team during tenure of former boss Roy Keane, the former under 18-captain quickly endured himself to the Black Cat faithful having made his debut against Blackburn Rovers during their Carling Cup clash in 2008.
Tenacity, worth ethic, as well as a solid understanding of the tactical side of football were and are Henderson’s stand out qualities. The Sunderland-born star also habours the ability to pick out some super accurate passes and is often at the heart of most of his sides’ attack.
Unsurprisingly, Henderson was chosen to participate in England’s U21 side this summer despite the fact that he has already played over 40 matches this season at the heart of Steve Bruce’s midfield.
Sunderland finished tenth in the Premier League in 2010/2011 but also managed to secure some eye-popping victories over their rivals this season – most notably against Chelsea (3-0) in November. It was of course a match in which Henderson shone having set up Asamoah Gyan to score a second crucial goal.
Can Jordan Henderson Fit Into the Liverpool Midfield?
Of course, we have been here before. The signing of Alberto Aquilani from AS Roma in 2009 was supposed to usher in an age of midfield excellence for the Merseyside club, but as we know, that turned out to be one big snafu.
Having splashed out an extraordinary £35million for Andy Carroll from Newcastle, coach Kenny Daglish has received much backing from the board – financially and in word – and should Henderson be the missing link in middle of the Anfield park (alongside captain Steven Gerrard), it may not be long before we see Liverpool – yes, Liverpool end that 21-year wait for a league crown.
