‘To be a leader you need to be devoted, you to be trusted and, most importantly, you need to lead by example’ - John Terry doesn’t know what these worlds mean laments James Shaw…
In the absence of feeling or integrity (or the World of Football) John Terry continues to prosper. He parades around like he has no moral obligation to exist in this world as an honest person. Like most footballers John Terry got married young. In doing so he committed to a relationship in front of god and promising to stand by one woman for the rest of his life. A few years later and he completely contradicted this, like a snake – in fact he’s worse than a snake – they remain pure and true to themselves, whereas Terry continues to disrespect our human race.
Let’s get one thing clear, I’m not a religious person nor do I believe in god, but I do have morals and I’m not a hypocrite to a level that one cannot fathom trust. John Terry cheats; he disrespects his teammates, his family, and his children. One day his kid’s pure minds will be filled with all that’s bad in the World after they hear that their daddy slept with other women, ruined a relationship with a teammate and was accused in the public eye as a racist. Yet he, with no guilt and no ethical values, chose to disregard the promises he made to a god that he believes in to honour one women and all that she represents as a human.
Lest we forget, this man is not only a husband and a father but a captain of his Club and Country. He is meant to be a leader of men who on the pitch represents the whole team’s persona. In fact, I would go as far to suggest that an English Captain or any Captain of their National Team represents his nation. We have previously had heroines which include Bobby Moore – who was an icon of English culture and it’s ‘never give up attitude. Then you have Franz Anton Beckenbauer, a man who represented the elegance, as well as the supremacy of West German culture. With this theory in mind, is England now an illiterate nation of racists, liars and cheaters? No, of course not, but while John Terry, is at the helm there is no reason why an outsider looking in might picture England as a nation built up of disenchanted hooligans.
To conclude, John Terry is not a good person. There are bad people in this World who cheat on their wives and shout racial slurs. But John Terry is worse – flaunting his bad nature to a nation in front of a captive and impressionable audience. Some will argue that on the pitch his attitude makes up for his off field antics – and it’s true, he is a fantastic leader and a marvellous defender. But he represents much more than this, he is paid so much to be a great deal more than this…but he just doesn’t deliver. This racial scandal is yet another page in his rapidly expanding naughty portfolio – and considering that he is a leader of this Country and an example for children across the globe – Terry doesn’t deserve to wear a band around his arm that reads ‘Captain’.
