Goals by Rafael Van Der Vaart and Kyle Walker gave Tottenham a 2-1 win over neighbours Arsenal in the North London derby on a day where Arsenal’s status as a top four side officially died.

Arsene Wenger Arsenal

Asinine, awkward, apoplectic, amused, angry; these cornucopia of emotions rankled amongst the pocket of watching Arsenal fans situated at the Park Lane end at White Hart Lane as once again they had to endure the misery of seeing their once dominant side, wilt before collapsing in yet another big game.

That their side lost to old rivals Tottenham for the third time in four Premier League matches is bad enough, but this defeat – indeed the manner of it had a kind of apocalyptic feel to it.

Playing well in the grand context of the match, looking particularly sharp when it came to creating chances, Arsene Wenger’s brittle battlers were undone (yet again) by what can only be described as mediocre goals.

Take the winner by Spurs fullback Kyle Walker as a case in point, the strike itself only coming about because six Arsenal players were outdone by a throw-in! Unbelievable.

The Premier League table does not make for pleasant reading as the Gunners languish in 15th – yes, 15th place, a mighty 12 points behind leaders United and City, and eight behind fourth placed Newcastle.

Kyle Walker Goal vs Arsenal

With the dour news that fullback Bacary Sagna will now be sidelined for three months after suffering a leg break, the writing is well and truly on the wall for a club who have endured 14 consecutive years in Europe’s elite competition and in recent years could at least guaranteed to be challenging for some major honours.

Never has the cloud of pessimism surrounding Arsenal, the manager and those dominoes called players been so thick.

Equally sad is the fact that no real Gunners fan truly believed that their side would actually beat their fierce North London rivals on a red-hot Sunday afternoon, so bereft of conviction, confidence and faith in this joke-of-a-team are they.

Arsene Wenger

Laughably, after the match an increasingly disillusioned Arsene Wenger finally began to concede that a title tilt is beyond his side (something every Gooner has known for God knows how long), meaning the rest of the season will be played out in a depressingly sorrowful manner as the Frenchman destroys the glorious legacy he has built.

Four defeats by October 3 is sickening, but being the laughing stock of the Premier League and not knowing where the next three points are coming from is downright repulsive.

Equally humiliating is the fact that England’s third most successful club ever may not even qualify for next season’s Europa League (forget about the UEFA Champions League), moreover, will finish below Tottenham for only the second time since the inception of the Premier League.

Sunday was the day, the day of all days when Gooners everywhere knew without doubt that their side is finished as a viable Premier League force perhaps for the long foreseeable future.
