The FA have charged Mario Balotelli with violent conduct after he appeared to stamp on Tottenham midfielder Scott Parker during Manchester City’s 3-2 win over Spurs at the Etihad Stadium.
The pair came together in the second half with the combative Scott Parker diving in to block Balotelli’s shot.
As the Italian striker swivelled to restore his balance, he seemingly stamped out on Parker with his trailing right leg although referee Howard Webb, who had a close up view of the incident, let play continue.
Balotelli then went on to score the winning penalty in injury-time as City grabbed a priceless 3-2 win to preserve their three point lead at the top of the table.
Afterwards, a furious Harry Redknapp slammed the City forward and suggested that the stamp on Scott Parker was intentional and should have resulted in a red card.
“Having looked at it, I do [think he should have been sent off],” Redknapp said.
“The first one could have been an accident, but on the second one he’s backheeled him straight in the head. It is not the first time he has done that and I am sure it won’t be the last.
“I am the last person to talk about getting people sent off and what they should and shouldn’t do. But it is blatant. He reacts to challenges like that at times. Scott has got a cut on his head,” he added.
The FA seemed to have agreed and on Monday evening released a statement confirming that Balotelli has been charged with violent conduct.
A statement on the official FA website said: “The FA has today charged Manchester City forward Mario Balotelli with violent conduct following an incident in his side’s home game against Tottenham Hotspur.
“Balotelli was involved in an incident with Tottenham’s Scott Parker during Manchester City’s 3-2 victory at the Etihad Stadium on Sunday 22 January 2012.
“Balotelli has until 6pm on Wednesday 25 January 2012 to respond to the charge.”
