The 2011 UEFA Champions League Final Stats
Published May 29, 2011 | By Rolly
Barcelona thrashed Manchester United 3-1 at Wembley to win the 2011 UEFA Champions League as they sealed a fourth European Cup. The statistics, as revealed by UEFA, proved the Spaniards were utterly dominant.
Goals by Pedro, Lionel Messi and a fantastic curling effort by David Villa gave the Catalan giants a deserved 3-1 win after United had temporarily leveled through Wayne Rooney.
By the end of an enthralling 90 minutes, encapsulated magic and majesty, the official statistics as revealed by UEFA reaffirmed the fact that Pep Guardiola’s men were a class above their opponents as La Blaugrana consolidated their reputation as the number one side in the Solar System and perhaps in history.
Here are the statistics to prove so:
- 63% Possession; Barcelona ended the match with 63% possession which at one point was as high as 70%. Their ability to strangle that little round white thing was inimical to their success as United chased shadows – literally.
- 19 Shots on Goal; 12 of which were on target. Compare this to Manchester United’s…zero, yes zero shots on target. Does Wayne Rooney’s goal count as a shot on target?
- 12 Goals for Messi; Lionel Messi scored his twelfth Champions League goal this season to equal the record set by Ruud Van Nistelrooy.
- 100 Goals in Two Seasons; apart from netting his first ever goal on English soil – at the home of football – the Argentine superstar also netted his 100th goal in two seasons. The ‘Flea’ also equalled Cristiano Ronaldo’s goalscoring record this season.
- 0; Yep, Manchester United had zero corner kicks compared to Barcelona’s five.
- 124; Barcelona’s midfield maestro Xavi clocked up an astonishing 124 passes on his own thus trouncing Manchester United’s nearest rival Rio Ferdinand’s who completed a measly 40.
