Eric Abidal Thanks Team-mates for Cup Gesture
Eric Abidal has given a heartfelt thank you to his Barcelona team-mates and captain Carles Puyol for allowing him to be the first player to lift the famous jug-eared trophy after the match.
Goals by Pedro, Messi and David Villa sealed a superb 3-1 victory for the Catalan giants who bagged their fourth European Cup.
Having mounted the famous steep stairs of Wembley, Barca full-back Eric Abidal was given the captaincy and allowed to be the first to hoist the European Cup high into the London sky and bring to a close an incident-fuelled season.
The Frenchman had only just covered from life saving surgery to remove a tumour in his liver and made his return to first team action during his sides’ second-leg semi-final clash against Real Madrid to a rapturous applause.
Having missed the 2009 final in Rome due to suspension, Abidal admitted that he was overcome with emotion after club captain Carles Puyol handed him the armband and invited him to lift the Champions League trophy following their 3-1 victory.
“I can’t explain the emotions I have,” the former Olympique Lyon ace said. “It’s spectacular. I’m so thankful for the gesture,” he added.
Catch the moment of jubilation below which brang a tear to the eye of many.
