Real Madrid crashed to a 1-0 defeat at the hands of lowly Sporting Gijon as Jose Mourinho’s nine year unbeaten home record came to a dramatic end.

They say all good things must come to end and so it proved in the Spanish capital at Saturday night as unfancied Sporting Gijon toppled Los Blancos with a well deserved 1-0 victory.

The winner came in the 79th minute as the Madrid defence were left floundering by a slick-flowing Gijon move finished emphatically by former Atletico Madrid player Miguel de las Cuevas who drove low beyond a despairing Iker Casillas.

Minus Cristiano Ronaldo, fullback Marcelo, in-form striker Karim Benzema and midfield playmaker Xabi Alonso, Mourinho’s men struggled to find fluidity and rhythm and were guilty of missing a host of chances, notably from returning forward Gonzalo Higuain.

The defeat condemns the self-proclaimed ‘Special One’ to his first domestic league defeat in nine years and 150 matches.

As part of Nike’s French ‘new era’ campaign a Nike representative talks football to new manager Laurent Blanc. It’s all arty and stuff…

Oh, and it looks like a rugby shirt.

Seeing as those savvy financial folk down at Liverpool have secured a £20 million a year deal shirt sponsorship with Standard Chartered, (one that should just about equal Manchester United’s Aon deal) I have decided to flex my graphic designer muscles and design what I think the kit will look like next year…

As you can see I have used the iconic Candy top and plastered Standard Chartered over the top. I reckon Liverpool will go down the retro look route seeing as everyone is doing it and it will give them a chance to come up with an excuse for only using it for a year. “oh it is the 20th anniversary SINCE WE WERE LAST CHAMPIONS!”, you know something along those lines.

Anyway come up with your own kit if you reckon you can do better and email it to us. Not likely though, I am the king of Microsoft Paint…

Just thought I’d bring to attention this Soccerbible article about a special edition Barcelona shirt for their one-off game against Man City. Supporting their “More than a Club” campaign all proceeds from the auctioned off shirts will go to helping education and the availability of sports in Refugee camps.

Barcelona already pay Unicef to have their logo on the front of their shirt (An idea also brilliantly taken on by Aston Villa recently) and I personally think it’s brilliant to see a big club promoting charity during an economic crisis where other teams’ heavy spending is alienating them from their fans.

Top club, top attitude. Can’t wait to see them wipe the floor with Real Madrid this season.

A list of charities Inthestands promotes is available here if you’re feeling altruistic.http://www.inthestands.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2009/07/coco2.jpg

A lot has been made of Newcastle United’s famous away strip this season, I personally have grown to liking it and went down the shops the other day to buy one. In the end I opted for last years purple away kit as it was only for a fiver, bargain. Enough about me, I saw this new shirt and I threw up in my mouth a little.

The kit was made to commemorate the successful Dutch team of 1978 but the fact that it is so luminous, is produced by Vandanel (who?) and sponsored by 188BET just put the nail in the coffin. How many Wigan fans will shell out £40 the top and £20 for the shorts? Probably a similar amount to how many bought Bendtners shirt.

There is some really nice away kits out there this year like Manchester United’s and Liverpool’s but this one is truly horrendous…

With England on the road to South Africa 2010 and the friendly against The Netherlands just around the corner, I’ve decided to make a few subtle alterations to the new England shirt. Though fine before, these slight tweaks will ensure that we win the next World Cup. Are there any obvious improvements I have missed out?

Sometimes kits can’t sell themselves these days; this is either because they are awful (e.g. toongerines) or because people don’t fancy forking out 40 quid a year. I believe West Ham have solved this problem.

dummyThat’s right, get  famous celebrity fan Ray Winston to model the kit.

Either that or the striker crisis at West Ham has got so bad that Zola has decided to give the actor his dream of becoming a footballer, by sticking him up top next season.

Signing of the contract would have gone like this…

Ray – “I am going to have to turn this opportunity down”

Zola – No, you are going to have to turn this opportunity yes!   – (For the film Buffs)

This one is for the childish ones out there (including myself)

deportivo-wanka

This is Deportivo Wanka’s 2003 home kit. They obviously have the same sense of humour as us, hence why they have put D.WANKA on it

Two of Mexico’s beautiful goalkeeper kits to feast your eyes on.

I can’t decide which one I like better.
