Adios Rafa…
At last Rafa Benitez has been shown the door.
After foolishly giving him a new contract last spring all recent discussions have been about how much of a payoff he will receive. Now that seems to have been resolved and Liverpool are looking for a new manager.
Early markets show Kenny Dalglish and Martin O’Neill as favourites at around 2-1. Roy Hodgson and Guus Hiddink follow next.
Martin O’Neill is a quality manager and has done a brilliant job at Aston Villa. Whether or not he would want the Liverpool job will much depend on whether he thinks he can keep hold of his big names at Villa, players like Jimmy Milner, and whether or not Gerrard and Torres stayed. Last summer he expressed his frustration at building a classy squad only to lose key elements of it every year. So I think it’d come down to Jimmy Milner.
Although Dalglish is a Liverpool legend and is heavily involved in the running of the club including the search for a new manager, I still don’t think he’ll be next.
Hodgson has done a cracking job at Fulham, but whether he would get the respect of star players at a much bigger club is debatable. This leaves Hiddink. Guus has done wonders all over the world with both club and national sides. He would be my choice and is almost guarantee to sort Liverpool out. But, and this is a big but, he’s already agreed to take over as Turkey boss in August. Whether he could break that contract, we don’t know. But I think he’s a man of his word and is unlikely to. Therefore, it’s got to be Martin O’Neill at 7/2 with BlueSquare and 888Sport.

Kenny Dalglish great player and manager but i think he has ‘had his day’ and Martin O’Neill would turn Liverpool into Aston Villa so they would be no better off. Hodgson would be out of his depth. Common sense for me would be to go for Hiddink, but when has common sense come into anything at Liverpool for the last few years.
