Serie A Review

Due to several deadlines that had to be met coupled with me being extremely lazy, it has led me to not giving you all a Serie A review last weekend so for anyone interested, here is a bumper crop of matches with results from both the weekend of the 5th/6th December and 12th/13th December.

Round-Up for weekend 1

The Rome derby saw Roma come out on top in a scrappy game which saw a Marco Cassetti volley win it for ‘i Giallorossi’ but as per usual, the derby was marred by scuffles both on and off the pitch. David Pizarro was sent off late on after a second yellow card while the game was stopped at one point due to flares on the pitch. One day this match might be played without any crowd trouble but not this season.

A great victory for Juventus rekindled their title hopes if not for the season, at least for another week as they beat Inter Milan 2-1 at the Stadio Olimpico. Goals from Melo (contested) and Marchisio gave all three points to the title contenders. Mourinho was also sent to the stands after complaining to the ref about the free-kick which led to the first Juve goal. Melo also received his marching orders late on in the game after a tussle with Balotelli in which, several players from both sides then got involved. Most importantly though, it has left the league open once again.

Milan also helped their title credentials by beating the early pace-setters Sampdoria 3-0 at the San Siro. Three first half strikes from Borriello, Seedorf and Pato put the game to bed by half time and left Sampdoria wondering where their early season form has gone.

Serie A 12th/12th Results

Bari 3-1 Juventus

Chievo 2-1 Fiorentina

Lazio 1-0 Genoa

Milan 0-2 Palermo

Catania 0-1 Livorno

Atalanta 1-1 Inter Milan

Siena 2-1 Udinese

Parma 2-1 Bologna

Sampdoria 0-0 Roma

Round-Up for weekend 2

A very poor weekend for all the title chasers as Inter and Roma drew while Milan and Juventus lost. Juventus were the first to slip-up against a plucky Bari side as Meggiorini, Barreto and Almiron all got on the scoresheet. Trezeguet’s equaliser turned out to be nothing more than a consolation goal, especially when an uninspiring Diego missed a penalty with the score at 2-1.

After several good performances from the Rossoneri, they were expected to gain at least a point at the Renzo Barbera but Miccoli and Bresciano put an end to that expectation as Palermo ran out 2-0 winners. Counter-attacking football was at its pinnacle in this game as Palermo shocked Milan into their first defeat since late september.

Inter started well against Atalanta with a great goal from Milito and continued to push for another but in the 65th minute, Sneijder was sent off which allowed Atalanta back into the game. They found an equaliser courtesy of Simone Tiribocchi with seven minutes to play but failed to add anymore. Fortunately for Inter, this dropping of points actually extended their lead at the top of the table as both Juve and Milan lost.

1st = Inter Milan

2nd = AC Milan

3rd = Juventus

4th = Parma

5th = Roma

18th = Atalanta

19th = Siena

20th = Catania
