Best striker in the world?!?

I don’t know if anyone else reads World Soccer but I have a subscription to the magazine and in the most recent issue, they raised the point of the best striker in the world. I’ll explain how they came to their conclusion in a moment but I was wondering what other people thought was required in a striker and who they feel is the best.

villa torres

World Soccer used quite a complicated system based on goals scored in each competition and points were doubled etc depending on which league they were scored in or if it was in an International match. They also based it on the last four seasons only along with the first month or two of this season. So obviously players such as Henry and Van Nistelrooy are not as high as one would expect because their goal tally’s have decreased as they have got older. Shevchenko does not even make the list due to his lack of goals for Chelsea and the loan spell at AC Milan eventhough he was one of the most clinical strikers in the world when originally at the Rossoneri.

Here’s the list and you can see what you think

20th – Zlatan Ibrahimovic

19th – Robbie Keane (lol)

18th – Ruud Van Nistelrooy

17th – Kaka

=15th – Lionel Messi

=15th – Wayne Rooney

14th – Mario Gomez (lol)

13th – Luis Fabiano

12th – Diego Forlan

11th – Dimitar Berbatov

10th – Freddie Kanoute

9th – Fernando Torres

8th – Thierry Henry

7th – Didier Drogba

6th – Klass-Jan Huntelaar

5th – Luca Toni (lol)

4th – Miroslav Klose

3rd – Cristiano Ronaldo

2nd – Samuel Eto’o

1st – David Villa

So there you have it, David Villa is rated the best striker in the world. And to be fair to the man, he won by quite a margin. 35 points seperated him from second placed Eto’o, an amazing striker in his own right. How Robbie Keane is in the list I will never know and I’m a spurs supporter! But anyway, what do you all think? We all want different things in a striker but who would you want in your team if you could have anyone?

Drogba would be my first choice! He has a combination of pace, instinct, imperial strength and altitude and hardwork that noone else matches at the moment.
A year ago, my pick would have been Eto’o but i am scared he was that outstanding because of his surrounding at Barcelona. Not to say that he is trash, but having messi, xavi and iniesta feeding you is eventually make you look better.
Villa, Torres and Rooney are also up there (mind that i ommitted messi, C. ronaldo and kaka who would fit more the definition of trequartista)

  • Mark:

id take rooney out of all.

Robbie keane being mentioned makes this whole thing void.

  • Jermaine Beckford

DROGBA IS the undisputed best striker in the world …whichever way you look at it…pace, skill, power, results….he is not the fear of all defences fro nothing..Villa is quite a local champ and Torres wont do better than Inzaghi…drogba can score from free kicks & set pieces, hold the ball, dribble, score headers, hold the ball & give accurate passes..no other striker has two thirds of these qualities…give credit where it is due…he is the cherry at the top…strikers like him are be few & far between in history

  • vince:

samuel etoo is past his prime, Cronaldo is not a true striker,Klose is a local champ, toni is a one tournament wonder, huntelaar is an insult to this list ….I think this list is mixed up …actually more of upsiide down

  • Ben:

Drogba is top quality and some of his attributes exceed most of the other strikers here although i would question if he is as clinical as players such as Villa and Eto’o. Although each of these two have their weaknesses, if given a one-on-one chance, I would put money on them finishing it before Drogba.

  • Mark:

drogba doesnt have the ability to come on and turn the game around, rooney does. rooney can play any position (within reason) and still put in an outstanding performance. he may not have the power that drog has but overall i think hes the better player.

  • Ash:

i would take torres over any striker any day of the week, the lad has the ability to beat a man and score left foot right foot and head and hes got a fair amount of pace and strength too. nando is definitely my man for numero uno

    etoo 2nd

    the drog 3rd

  • Ben:

i wud probs take torres as well tbh, drogba is a beast bt torres has more pace and i reckon he would be slightly better in a one on one chance, e.g euro 2008 final against germany. But i do think torres and drog are the best strikers in the world.

  • Curtis:

don’t know why ibrahimovic is ranked at 20. so technically gifted for a player at his height plus taking that into account makes him dangerous in the air. my top 5 woulda been 1.drog 2. torres 3. zlatan ibrahimovic 4. david villa 5. samuel etoo

  • jabi:

i think that drogba is all around best

  • Andy:

    Robbie Keane is number 1!

  • miroslav:

    Torres is simply the best.

  • LS:

Villa is not so well known because he’s in unfashionable Valencia, I hope the coming World Cup will make everyone situp and see the talent he embodies.

  • marya:

TORRES IS THE BEST STRIKERR EVAAAA

  • Daniel:

    TORRES IS SIMPLY THE BEST

  • Ollie:

Torres deserves a higher spot than nine…so unfortunate they didnt play to his talent in the world cup… spain would have dominated even more
