Championship Weekend Review

West Brom moved top this weekend, capatalising on Newcastle’s away loss to Forest. Cardiff closed in on Middlesbrough, before climbing up to third with a win on Tuesday. Could this be the bluebirds season? At the other end of the table Ipswich drew again, quickly levelling having gone behind to an early Beattie goal. How much longer can Keano keep his job?

Middlesbrough 0 -1 Watford

Middlesbrough continued a poor home run here losing to mid-table Watford. This was clearly a loss too many as Southgate was sacked after Tuesdays game. The goal came from a defensive mistake, with Middlesbrough losing it on the edge of the area. From there ex-Red Danny Graham played in Tom Cleverley who finished neatly past Brad Jones. This was Cleverley’s fifth goal of the season and the Man United youngster is starting to look like something special. Middlesbrough could have won the game with a goal disallowed and a spectacular McMahon strike hitting the bar and bouncing down onto the line.

Nottingham Forest 1-0 Newcastle

Nottingham Forest made it 4 wins in a row with a great win over the league leaders. Playing one up at home could have been risky move for Forest but it payed dividends for Billy Davis’ team. Looking dangerous from the off Dexter Blackstock forced Taylor into a great save from a glancing header early on. Later oth sides could have scored, Nottingham Forest hitting the post from a corner and then Newcastle also hitting the woodwork from a free kick. Blackstock sealed the victory with a delicate finish on the stroke of half time. Forest held on under pressure in the second half, Newcastle even got the ball in the net but Nolan was adjudged offside.

West Brom 3-1 Reading

This made it one win in seven for Reading, how things have changed from their impressive Premiership performances only a few years ago. Reading looked promising early on, going ahead from a Matt Mills header. West Brom drew level taking advantage of some awful play from Reading. A Reading corner was cleared, helped over the half way line by a Reading player, leaving Jerome Thomas to beat take the ball round the keeper who a good 40 yards out. Thomas then showed his pace to make sure of the goal. Reading scored two good goals to extend their lead. The best from Mulumbu in the 87th minute, a looping volley from outside the area sealing the win.
