Championship Review

So far the Premiership old boys are showing their class, occupying the top 3 places. After paying out £2 million compensation to Keegan Newcastle failed to score for the first time this season against Bristol City. Fans can only hope that any takeover, made more likely by the compensation pay out, causes minimum disruption. At the other end there was no change with Ipswich and Peterborough losing. Plymouth’s win against Scunthorpe was not enough to take them out of the drop zone.
Barnsley 2 – 1 Ipswich
Coventry 1 – 1 Leicester
Crystal Palace 4 – 1 Blackpool
Derby 3 – 0 Sheffield Wednesday
Newcastle 0 – 0 Bristol City
Peterborough 1– 2 Nottingham Forest
Plymouth 2 – 1 Scunthorpe
Preston 0 – 0 West Brom
Reading 0 – 2 Middlesbrough
Sheffield United 1 – 1 Doncaster
Swansea 2 – 0 QPR
Watford 0 – 4 Cardiff
Barnsley 2 – 1 Ipswich
The division’s worst defensive records met when Ipswich lost to remain bottom of the table. Barnsley went ahead early on with a low Iain Hume shot from outside the box. A diving header from Rosenior brought the sides level late in the first half after the ball rebounded off the Barnsley keeper. In the second half a missed penalty from Hume kept the game level until 6 minutes into injury time when a low Jon Macken shot found its way through a crowded box to win the game. Roy Keane said he couldn’t fault his players but refused to answer questions on his future at the club, is this the end of Keane’s time at Ipswich already?
Reading 0 – 2 Middlesbrough
In midweek Boro fans showed unusual patience in actually being present at the end of the match to boo their side off after losing late on to Leicester. After a poor run the Teessiders might have got things back on track with a good performance on Saturday. A 12th minute corner from Adam Johnson was met by Preston Loanee Sean St.Ledger for his second of the season at Boro. After failing to score from a first half chance ex Reading player Leroy Lita pulled something special out of the bag in the second half. A lovely collect on turn on the half way line was followed by Lita showing pace, beating 3 players before shooting low and hard from the edge of the box. It’s not working out for Reading at the Madejski, this loss made it 0 wins in their last 14 home games.
Watford 0 – 4 Cardiff
Cardiff are the league’s top scorers and after their 6-1 victory at Derby the Bluebirds made in 10 in 2 games. Two set pieces provided the opening couple, the first a Peter Whittingham penalty after Bothroyd had been pulled down in the box. The second considerably more spectacular, 17 year old Adam Matthews scored his first senior goal with a 50 yard free kick; i’d love to be able to say he meant it. In the second half the scoring continued with 2 goals in 2 minutes from Whittingham and Bothroyd. The Welsh club certainly have some talent going forwards and showed it here, if they keep attacking like this they could well prove to be the newly relegated Premiership boys’ biggest rivals.
