Footballer confuses the fuzz with fans

Grant Leadbitter was recently stopped for speeding by police who he assumed were Newcastle fans.

Sports - September 22, 2007

The Sunderland midfielder had left a pub and was returning home when an unmarked police car began to follow him. Leadbitter apparently believed that it was rival Newcastle fans after him so when he reached the three lane section of the A1, he put pedal to the metal and managed 112mph in his BMW M6. The volvo police car managed to keep up but at this point, began to struggle so turned the sirens on and Leadbitter then stopped.

In court, Leadbitter accepted that he had been driving dangerously due to the speed at which he was doing, but under the circumstances, should not receive points on his license and a lengthy fine. He admitted to being scared at the time of the car following him and wanted to get home as soon as possible.

The judge looked kindly upon Leadbitter and reduced his sentence to 14 days without driving and numerous small fines.

Will we now see other footballers coming up with the same excuse??     Jermain Defoe was stopped for speeding today but has been let off as he believed he was being chased by angry Arsenal fans??
