Top 10 of the week – Premiership Teens

top10

iWith the Premier league just around the corner I thought I would have a look at the teens set to blast onto the scene this year. It was a hard one this week as I have not seen all these players in action; so it’s only a loose top 10. It would be great if people could give me their other recommendations. – Enjoy!

CHELSEA V INTER MILAN, 2009 WORLD FOOTBALL CHALLENGE 10) Daniel Sturridge, 19 (Chelsea)

A graduate of Manchester City’s successful youth team, Daniel is now among the ranks at Chelsea. The 19 year old looks sharp, Having scored already for Chelsea in pre-season – I just hope he gets first team action team he deserves . Sturridge made 16 appearances for Man City last season scoring four goals and provided three assists. The fans voted him Manchester City Young Player of the Season this year, If he emulates this success for Chelsea he will certainly prove his worth as a future England star.

james mccarthy one team in ireland 9) James McCarthy, 18 (Wigan)

An array of Clubs over Europe have had their eye on James for a while, but it was Wolves and Wigan who made bids for the Ireland international. The Scottish born midfielder signed for Wigan this year for 3m, from Hamilton Athletic, leaving Scotland as Scottish PFA Young Player of the Year (2009) and with two young Player of the Month awards for December 2008 and January 2009. Let’s hope we see him repeat this individual success for Wigan.

8 ) Jordan Spence, 19 (West Ham)

At the tender age of 19 Spence is already in the history books for captaining the only England team (at under 17 level) to beat Brazil in a FIFA competition. He has since captained an undefeated U-19 team during the 2007-08 season, making 9 appearences and has been compared to the likes of Bobby Moore and Rio Ferdinand. It is no wonder that he has been tipped as a England’s future captain.

delpho_280x420_24176a7) Fabian Delph, 19 (Aston Villa)

Aston Villa faced stiff competition for Manchester City and Everton when it came to signing the Leeds prodigy, but from what I have heard it seems to have been worth the effort. The under 21 international looks set to give competition to the Villa midfielders with two of Sidwell, Reo Coker, Downing and Petrov looking to deputise the central midfield positions –but I can see Delph earning a place come mid-season.

Kieran Gibbs Arsenal 2008/09

6) Kieran Gibbs, 19 (Arsenal)

When Clichy Injured himself against Tottenham, Gibbs took his chance to shine. He made appearances in important games in the Champions league , the FA Cup and the Premier league, yet he didn’t look out of his depth. It looks liekly that Gibbs is set to be our future England left back.

5) Danny Welbeck, 18 (Manchester united)

Danny marked his premiership debut with a 30 yard curling shot that you might remember. In total he has played 13 games for Man Utd, scoring 3 goals and at the age of 18 he is developing into a player or great quality.

Rafael of Manchester United

4) Rafael, 19 (Manchester United)

Obviously Gary Neville is Manchester United’s first choice right back, but Rafael Da Silva proved a solid understudy. He made 28 appearances, scoring one goal and was shortlisted for the young player of the year award for 2008-09.  Rafael and his identical brother Fabio (who play’s on the left side) may see themselves holding down a regular place at Man United in years to come.

ARSENAL V ATHLETICO MADRID

3) Aaron Ramsey, 18 (Arsenal)

After impressing at Cardiff in the Championship Ramsey soon attracted Premiership interest, first Manchester United enquired, and then Arsenal and Everton joined the race. Eventually a £5m bid from Arsenal was accepted. Wenger described Ramsey as “a player with a fantastic engine, good build, good technique and good vision. He has already had a taste of Premiership and European football and scored his first goal in a 5–2 victory away against Fenerbahce in the group stages of the UEFA Champions League. (He is the youngest ever scorer in this competition). He already has 6 Wales caps and a great future ahead of him.

Football - England Under 21 Training

2) Jack Rodwell, 18 (Everton)

Dubbed the New Gerrard; Rodwell has a lot to live up to – but I reckon this kid is made of the right stuff. Rodwell really showed his worth in this year’s under 21 competition this year, his mazing runs wowed critics all over the world. He is part of an Everton youth set-up that includes Jose Baxter, Dan Gosling and Luke Garbutt who just missed out on my top ten.

1) Jack Wilshere, 17 (Arsenal)

Considered the first World Class English player to graduate from the Arsenal Academy, and its about time that Wenger has turned his attention to homing British talent. Jack will certainly be tipped to push for a first team place this season having already proved his worth in pre-season and in the previous season in the League cup. I honestly think he will become a world class player and I believe Wenger is the man to get the best out of him.

  • picks of the bunch would be the two jacks.

  • Federico Macheda?

  • Shaw:

Sure Macheda scored two important goals for Man U last season, but I still think he has a lot to prove.

All those on my list have enjoyed competitive football at international and/or club level, whereas Marcheda has only 20 minutes and 2 goals at U-16 level to his name.

But yes he’s only 17 and a fantastic prospect.
