Sir Bobby Robson… Tributes

Sports - February 23, 2008

With the sad news of Sir Bobby Robson’s passing, here at In The Stands we each have our own tributes to the great man.

Shaw: ” Bobby Robson showed immense loyalty as Ipswich Town, managing them them from 1969 to 1982. During his tenure he won the FA Cup in 1978 and the Uefa Cup in 1981 and spent only five of his 13 seasons outside division ones top 6. Furthermore he trusted good old English youth at Ipswich bringing in only 14 players from other clubs – Managers today should take at least a page out of Bobbys book.”

Ash “I was watching the Newcastle vs Marseille Uefa cup semi the other day from 2004 and as I looked at that Newcastle side that was playing that day. It included Ambrose, Ameobi, Andy O’Brien, Aaron Hughes which with all due respect aren’t players you expect to see rubbing shoulders with Europe’s elite. That was Sir Bobby’s work. He did an amazing job at Newcastle bringing good league finishes and Champions League football and it was a shame how he lost his job there. Watching the Sir Bobby Robson trophy the other day I was disappointed not to be able to go, but it was very fitting the reception he received that day. The match was in support of his foundation he set up to raise £500,000 to help combat cancer, such is his popularity the figure was surpassed in just seven weeks. Despite being a Newcastle fan Sir Bobby was classy enough to look at their plight objectively, with this being a particular highlight in my eyes. I live in Newcastle and up there they love their local heroes, he is held in the highest regard there and rightly so.

Ben: “He led England to within inches of the World cup final in 1990 and had it not been for the ‘hand of God’, possibly the same thing in 1986. England have only got worse since then tbh. A tes ta ment to his abilities as a manager and from what I have heard, he was a great person as well. R.I.P Sir Bobby Robson
