The latest rumour to hit Tyneside…
I can proudly say I was on Tyneside when pandemonium hit last year with the return of Kevin Keegan to Newcastle United. God on the Tyne was the message plastered across the city, but could he be returning for yet another stint in the managers post at St James’ Park?
The Sun is today reporting that a £100 million bid has been placed by a Dubai consortium (yes another) for Newcastle United led by a Mr Mahjoob. He is reportedly offering an additional £40 million for a transfer kitty to bring the North East giants back to where they belong.
Mahjoob’s intentions is to use the club as a global advertising vehicle for a new information website. With his spokesman adding: “The money is there. Mr Mahjoob has a healthy interest in football and is bidding to take over an ailing club with a great worldwide reputation.
He also added: “He envisages a clean sweep with Kevin Keegan coming back as manager, this time with his own staff and control of players. He has nothing against Shearer. He just thinks Keegan retains greater global appeal.”
As a follower of Newcastle (they’re my second team) I would love to see Keegan back in charge. His first second third spell on Tyneside was dramatically cut short and I have no doubt he will lead them to European football eventually.
This news broke following Newcastle’s 0-0 draw with League One side Leed’s United. Only 16,000 fans (5,000 away) showed up which must have alarm bells ringing for Mike Ashley as the famous Geordie fan base seem to finally losing their patience…
